Widespread riot was observed in London between 6 to 10 August. The problem started after the fatal shooting of Mark Duggan by Metropolitan Police Service firearms officers on 4 August 2011. A peaceful march was organized on 6th August against the shooting. Riots took place over the next few days which first started in Tottenham, North London but soon spread to other English cities, including Birmingham and Manchester. Rampant looting and arson attacks was also observed. It forced British Prime Minister David Cameron to cut short his vacation in Italy. Other opposition leaders also ended their holidays to monitor the situation. On 11th August an emergency meeting was called in Parliament. Police was not allowed to take leave. More than 3,000 people have been arrested. Riots also resulted in economic losses. The most common crimes were burglary (1,101), damage to vehicles (399), theft (310) and arson (162).

Unrest in Syria – UN delegation will examine the situation

Anti-government protests started in Syria in mid March. The protesters want to get rid of President Bashar al-Assad, whose family have been in power for 40 years. Security forces are trying to suppress the protest forcefully and many have been killed. The government has blamed the unrest on “terrorist groups”.  It is creating the need of humanitarian aids. A UN delegation with representatives from six agencies is in Syria to examine the situation at all trouble spots. They have been granted permission to visit protest places like Latakia, Homs, Hama, Deraa and others.

US requested the president to step down while Russia rejected this and saying that Mr. Assad should be given more time to make countrywide reforms. US and European union has imposed and tighten the sanctions.  In response to international pressure president has given his response through state television on Sunday.

Belly dance show at IIT Bombay

One of the most prestigious institution in India, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, is in controversy. A belly dancing program was organized during the freshers’ orientation event. The reports suggest that dancing girls swung and gyrated their hips and had bared midriffs.

Government collects lots of money from tax-payers to spend it in the development of nation. But the money is not getting utilized properly and the corrupt people in power are making assets.
